During the summer many kids get bored.  For the past 20 years, Lake-Sumter Community College has sponsored Kids' College for 2nd – 7th graders (ages 7-12). There are many classes that are offered to students like acting, creative writing, computer, dancing, Harry Potter, Kids in the Kitchen, Rocket Science, Space Camp, Yoga, and much more.

Kevin Von Maxey, 7th grade Language Arts teacher at Tavares Middle School, is also an instructor at Kids' College.

“I like to choose the subject I teach.  That is one of the draws of the program,” said Von Maxey, who will teach Kids' College for his 7th straight year.  Some of the classes Von Maxey is going to teach this year are Journalism, Movie-making, and Songwriting.  The classes change every year.  “For me, in the summer, I love the three-day weekends,” said Von Maxey.  The program is Monday through Thursday, so students only attend four days a week.

Shaye Glover has been a student participant at Kids' College for the last five years.  “The classes I like to take are baton and softball.”  She thinks the best part of Kids' College is meeting new people and hanging out with friends.  Glover said that she will be attending Kids College this year, too.

If you are bored during the summer, look into Kids' College.  The participants get to choose the classes they want., have fun, and meet new friends.  For more information you can visit their website at www.lscc.edu/continuinged/kidscollege.aspx.
