“The idea behind Lunch Bunch book club was to bring students together to have fun with reading,” said Mrs. Maxine Mangus, Literacy Coach/Specialist at Tavares Middle School. Her idea was behind this very successful program.

Tne goal of lunch bunch was to have parents, teachers, and administrators participate in a fun activity with students.  Mangus started the reading club three years ago.  It has been a successful journey with the book club.

“I think it is fun to be able to go because we get to read a really good book, and we get free pizza and juice,” said student-participant Shaye Patton.

Students go during lunch.  Mangus supplies the lunch for the students.  In the beginning, the students get the books and a certain amount of pages or chapters to read in a certain amount of time.  Then they get in a group and go over the pages they read, and their favorite and non-favorite parts.

Mangus also started creating reading posters for some of the top students in the school who read the most books.  “I feel like I have accomplished one of my goals in life,” said Breontae Barnes, who was recognized as one of the top readers.

The posters are intended to be a positive reflection of student achievement, and a good influence on the rest of the student body.  Even some faculty members have reading posters displayed with their favorite books around the school.  Throughout the halls of Tavares Middle School are lots of these posters with students, their favorite book to read, and why they like to read it.
