“I like having six periods a day because you can spend more time in your classes and learn more,” commented Jenna Schilling, an 8th grader at Tavares Middle School.  Since we have gone through the change of six period days to seven, there have been many changes around the school.  People say that the days feel shorter but the periods are actually longer.  Most teachers and students like six period days better than seven periods.

There are a few reasons given from students and faculty.  Students are left with less homework because they finish it in class. The students also get a chance to learn more than they did than last year. Teachers get more time to plan their lesson plan and they get 10 minutes more planning time.

“I like six periods better because my students feel less tired at the end of the day,” said Mrs. Elwart, a math teacher at Tavares Middle School.  Elwart thinks that the days go by faster than they did last year.  “My students get to practice more than they did last year and get better scores on tests,” she said.  Her plan periods are more productive and she can call more parents if she needs to, and make more lessons.  All the classes are longer so the students are focused and disciplined, so that mainly eliminates the calls to the parent’s altogether.

Jenna Schilling also likes longer classes. “I like having 6th periods because you can spend more time in your classes and learn more,” said she said.  She also thinks that since we have six period days, the students get less time to socialize than last year. Schilling thinks that it is better to lose an elective because you can learn more in the other core classes.

Overall, teachers and students seem to enjoy not having to go to seven periods because the day feels shorter.
