One look at the small room holding Adopt-A-Family's school
supplies behind the sixth grade building and shock sets in. That
one small room contains over 5,700 school supplies in it!
Recently, the Adopt-a-Family organization held a week long
supply drive. The winning class for each grade level won free
pizza and a soda at lunch. The winning classes included: sixth
grade, Mr. Edmundson, with 691 points, in seventh grade, Senora
Roberts and Mrs. Caldwell tied, both with 635 points, and in
eighth grade Mrs. Whittaker’s class won with 574 points.
In all, the school earned 7366 points.
Adopt-A-Family
members came up with the idea for a supply room at a meeting at
the end of last year.
“[We want to] eliminate [students] not having supplies or being
prepared as a distraction,” said Kevin Von Maxey, the AAF club
sponsor.
Any teacher may request school supplies for themselves or
students. A reason is not needed.
“There is no longer any reason why any student on campus cannot
have school supplies,” said Von Maxey. "We certainly hope
teachers take advantage of what we have collected."
The supply room contains everything from writing utensils to
folders to calculators. There is an abundance of supplies, and
anything needed is there.
Katie Chaput, an 8th grade member of Adopt-a-Family said, “The
economy is really bad right now, and we want all kids to have
what they need.”
In these times, it’s nice to see that kids in our school are
willing to help out others who need it. The Adopt-a-Family
organization holds fundraisers every year, and this year may
have been the most successful yet.
The supply drive was a great achievement, and other fundraisers
are planned, such as the yearly Money Wars and a Rock Band
contest. The club's main project every year is to supply
Christmas items to families in need in the local community.
Hopefully, that project will be as successful as the supply
drive.
