CLERMONT, FL – The Tavares Middle cross-county teams, two–time
defending Lake County Champions, collectively won their first meet
of the season, the Windy Hill Invitational on Wednesday afternoon.
The Tavares girls beat eight other teams, including East Ridge by a
mere four points, and fought off Windy Hill by seven points in what
proved to be an extremely close race at the top. Emily Imboden
finished in 6th place and Chelsea Spears in 10th
for the TMS girls, who have won 13 consecutive cross-country meets.
Lady Patriot runners Savannah Guenther and Casey Keough finished 11th
and 12th, while Kaley Smith and Michelle Zamperlini
finished out the scoring for the girls varsity.
The Tavares boys defeated Gray by 13 points and Carver by 32. TMS
runners Brian Buckner, Cole Higginbotham, Damon Arnett, Sasha Yates,
and David Buckner all finished in the top 15. Arnett, one of the
top runners for Tavares, found it difficult to judge how fast to
pace himself in the first meet of the season and was too exhausted
to stand after finishing. “I just collapsed. I pushed [myself] too
hard,” said Arnett.
In the JV race, the color red overwhelmed the course as TMS fielded
twice as many runners as the rest of the field combined. The
Tavares JV defeated East Ridge by 10 points, as Bayden Dora (2nd)
and Cristo Silva (4th) both finished in the top five.
“I’m excited we were able to win after only four practices, but we
have the potential to be a lot better,” said Tavares coach Kevin Von
Maxey. “It’s still too early to see what our strength and
weaknesses are as a team.”
