TAVARES, FL-- The Tavares boys and girls volleyball teams
defeated Umatilla Middle School in their season opener on
Tuesday, October 27, 2009.
The
Lady Patriots won in straight sets (25-17, 25-20) in an effort
to improve on last year's 6-4 record. The TMS girls were
Lake County Champions two seasons ago.
“Well, just playing is fun, but winning [is] the cherry on top.
It’s exciting and makes you really proud of your team,” said
back-setter Kara Horvath.
Umatilla had
problems due to inexperience in their first game.
One volley hit a Umatilla player in the face; another
blunder occurred when two Umatilla players collided and fell to
the floor after failing to call for the ball.
The TMS boys won 25-21, 25-11.
The Patriots scored the first four points of the game and jumped
out to a large lead as Umatilla continued to make service errors
and drop the ball. Tavares' Trey Vandegrift scored several
points during the run, but Umatilla came back and tied the game
at twenty-one.
The Patriots scored
the next four points to win the game. The second game was
never close. Both teams improve to (1-0) on the season.
